W. Reginald Bray (1879-1939) appeared to be an ordinary middle-class Englishman quietly living as an accountant in the leafy suburb of Forest Hill, England, but behind closed doors he had an extraordinary passion for sending unusual items through the mail. Having studied a copy of the Post Office Guide he discovered that the smallest item one could send was a bee, and the largest an elephant. Using this as a guide, Bray started to experiment with the types of things he mailed, eventually sending out more than thirty-two thousand curios and autograph requests.
Written and curated by British stamp collector John Tingey, The Englishman Who Posted Himself and Other Curious Objects tells this pioneer mail artist's remarkable story for the first time and includes delightful illustrations of some of his most inventive postal creations.
