When Aninku and Pepicek go to town for milk to make their sick mother better, their attempts to earn money by singing are thwarted by a bullying hurdy-gurdy grinder, Brundibar. However, after recruiting the help of three talking animals and three hundred schoolchildren, Aninku and Pepicek defeat their bully and return home triumphant.
'Brundibar' being Czech slang for 'Bumblebee' is based on a Czech opera of the same name with utmost cultural significance, as was set to music by Hans Krasa (who later was imprisoned in Theresienstadt ghetto, and then killed in Auschwitz), and after its completion in 1938 the opera was performed fifty-five times by the children of Terezin, a Nazi Concentration Camp in occupied Czechoslovakia.
